VR Chennai celebrated Onam in grand style with vibrant Pookolam floral designs, enchanting music, and delectable traditional cuisine. The event showcased the spirit of Kerala's harvest festival, creating a joyous atmosphere filled with cultural richness and delicious flavors for all to savor.

Purple Awards Auditions at VR Chennai

We called and the ladies of Chennai answered. With the auditions on 1st March, Purple Awards is awaiting the finale on 8th March.
Starting with the warmups in the Fitness round, the contestants then went for the Food round and showed off their culinary skills after a demonstration by our chefs on how to make pesto pasta and mocktails. The auditions ended with the ladies walking the ramp for the judges with their attire from H&M and hair by Dyson.

Basement Art Project | MAG 2020

Witness how the walls of our basement got transformed into a canvas of creativity, art, expression and sustainability.

This year, Upasana Asrani, SS Karthik, Mohan Babu, and Lotuz Head participated in the Basement Art Project, a true embodiment of the philosophy of Madras Art Guild that carries art out of the cozy confines of a gallery and displays it in the most public of spaces; all to elicit a reaction from the onlooker. Art Cinema by Gita Hudson at MAG 2020

Here is painter and documentary filmmaker Gita Hudson, talking about her documentaries that will be screened under the #ArtCinema event at #MadrasArtGuild2020.

The famed artist regards film-making as an extension of fine arts and has documented famed contemporary Indian and international artists, senior artists of the Madras Art Movement and the next generation of artists.

Head to #VRChennai to catch her #MAG2020 special art documentaries on painters and sculptors who defined the Madras Art Movement from the 1960s to now, on the 22nd of February, from 4 pm to 7 pm.

Childrens Art Competition

#MadrasArtGuild2020, in association with #MurugappaGroup and #GlobalArt, conducted the Children's Art Competition, with the intention of allowing children to explore their individuality. Over 500 children from across the city participated in the competition, with excited support from their doting parents and guardians.

#VRChennai signed off the evening with a prize distribution ceremony that celebrated the winners and the participants.

Wearable Art Fashion Show by NIFT Chennai at Madras Art Guild 2020

The 2nd edition of #MadrasArtGuild presented the #WearableArt #FashionShow that shed light on fashion that seamlessly blends with "trenditional" Chennai.

The show was split into 3 sequences, with unconventional designs by the students of NIFT Chennai, with concepts such as pop, current affairs and nature.

Tree Lighting Ceremony at VR Chennai ( 2nd December, 2019)

We spread light, love and laughter this Christmas, by welcoming the Christmas season with a magical tree lighting ceremony on December 2nd, where 30 kids from World Vision lit our Christmas tree, sang some carols with us, spent some time with Santa and had a jolly good time! G. Abhilash, who was awarded the title Yuva Kalabharathi by Bharath Kalachar and title of Kalai Ilamani by the State Government, graced the Kalki Theatre on the 1st of December, 2019. Karthik Fine Arts 2019 - Curtain Raiser (27th November, 2019)

Here is a throwback video from the curtain raiser of the 45th edition of the Kartik Fine Arts festival. The Margazhi Festival is a month long musical celebration with melodious performances that instill a magical feeling within. Unveiled at Kalki Theatre, it was attended by Mr Rajagopal Sekar (Secretary KFA), Mr KM Narasimhan (President KFA), Ms Priya Murle (Natya Darshan - Dance Conference Convener) and Ms Sumi Gupta. This was followed by a special concert by veena maestro Venkatramani, along with Aduthurai Guruprasad on mridangam.

WOAP Weekender 2019 at VR Chennai

On 10th November, VR Chennai hosted the biggest gourmet festival – World On A Plate Weekender. My Ganesha Chathurthi Workshop at VR Chennai - September 1, 2019

Parents and children alike got to embrace a bit of their artistic side with a special Ganesha Making workshop on the 1st of September. Curious shoppers looked on as renowned local artists showed participants the ropes to creating their own adorable little Ganesha idols, made completely out of natural and eco-friendly ingredients. VR Chennai Treasure Hunt - 10 March 2019

The Treasure Hunt held on March 10, in association with the Kaching! app, was an exciting event. Many teams raced against time to solve a set of 15 clues to win prizes worth over Rs. 1 Lakh. Top 50 teams will win big prizes, and top 5 will win the biggest prizes!

Table Tennis Super League Season 2 - 22.02.19 to 24.02.19

Top players from across Tamil Nadu converged at Swargamandapam in VR Chennai, as part of Season 2 of the Tamil Nadu Table Tennis Super League, to show off their talent while representing their respective franchises. Eight teams with players from various age groups battled it out against each other in an effort to be crowned the best. The finals were held in the presence of chief guests Miss India Tamil Nadu 2017 Sherlin Seth and 8-time National Table Tennis Champion Sharath Kamal, and the Mighty Warriors walked away with the trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

My Little Pony - 22 and 23 December, 2018

Over the holiday season, #VRChennai hosted a special #MyLittlePony event in association with #Hasbro. The young visitors to the Centre got a chance to interact with #PinkiePie and participate in a number of My Little Pony themed events games and activities, including a special children’s art hour, carpet games, treasure hunt, and much more. All participants also got special gifts from #FunCity, #Hamleys and #GAPKids.

Pongal Celebrations with Shakthisree Gopalan - 15.01.19

The Pongal Celebrations at VR Chennai also coincided with the Madras Art Guild 2019, a celebration of art from Chennai and beyond. As part of the event, the Pongal live-art installation, created by students from the Government College of Fine Arts, Kumbakonam, was unveiled by the famous vocalist Shakthisree Gopalan. VR Art Car - Madras Art Guild 2019

The VR Art Car has been an integral part of all public art festivals organised by the VR Art Programmes since its inception in 2013. In line with the art at the Madras Art Guild, the MAG Art Car has also be crafted to capture the culture and ethos of Chennai. The legendary Ambassador was chosen for its historical association with the city which was once its home. Painted by M. Senathipathi, President of Cholamandal Artists’ Village, this particular art piece is set to be one of the VR Art Programmes’ cherished possessions.

Whitefield Art Collective - Countdown to Madras Art Guild 2019

The Whitefield Art Collective (WAC) (Est. 2016) at VR Bengaluru is one of the largest community art festivals in Bengaluru. An initiative by the VR Art Programmes, the multi-disciplinary art initiative is known for giving a wide platform for emerging artists from the city and beyond.
At the inaugural edition of the #MadrasArtGuild, starting on January 10 at VR Chennai, you will be able to explore murals, sculptures and other art installations by some of the finest up-and-coming artists from Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.

Punjab Art Initiative - Countdown to Madras Art Guild 2019

The Punjab Art Initiative (Estd. 2017) at VR Punjab, is the largest community art festival in the state. Organised by the VR Art Programmes, it features a wonderful collection of FineArt, Installations and more by some of the most promising and prominent artists from across India. It also provides a platform for art students from Punjab and beyond to showcase their Art.
The inaugural edition of the Madras Art Guild, starting January 10 at VR Chennai, also gives students from art colleges in and around Chennai, an opportunity to bring their art to a larger audience.

 

Dumas Art Project - Countdown to Madras Art Guild 2019

The Dumas Art Project (Est. 2013), VR Surat was the first VR Art Programmes. A reflection of Virtuous Retail's philosophy of Connecting Communities, it has been a celebration of the #art and culture of the magnificent city of Surat and has become a highlight in the city’s social calendar.
Starting on January 10, the Madras Art Guild 2019 at VR Chennai is the latest addition to the list of VR Art Programmes and aims to encourage creative explorations that express Chennai’s spirit and aesthetic.

Movie lovers from across Chennai converged at VR Chennai for a special ArtCinema showcase of the critically acclaimed film Pollock. The screening was as part of the MadrasArtGuild2019 at TheHive.

Art Bazaar - Madras Art Guild - 2 & 3 February 2019

The MAG Art Bazaar, held as part of the Madras Art Guild at VRChennai, gave our patrons a special opportunity to shop for products crafted by artisans from across India. From traditional Tanjore paintings to Chettinad woven baskets, toys from Channapatna and more, along with unique creations by some of the city’s finest artists, the Bazaar had something for everyone to indulge in.

Children's Art Competition - Madras Art Guild - 26 & 27 January 2019

The 2-day long Madras Art Guild 2019 Childrens Art Competition, held in association with GlobalArt, saw participation from hundreds of talented youngsters from all over the city. Kids from the ages of 4-13 showcased their view of "My Chennai" by way of their art. The best entries were also given special awards at the end of each day.

Madras Art Guild Launch - 10.01.2019

The inaugural edition of the Madras Art Guild was launched on January 10 in the presence of Grammy-nominated musician Mandolin Rajesh, renowned art director Padma Shri Dr. Thota Tharani, M. Senathipathi, senior artist and president of Cholamandal Artists’ Village, along with cultural ambassadors and key members of Chennai’s art community. The evening commenced with an interesting panel discussion on “The Changing Landscape of Public Art”. The eminent panellists included photographer and founder of the Chennai Photo Biennale, Varun Gupta, senior artists Murali Cheeroth, Parvathi Nayar and Rahool Saksena, and fashion designer and founder of Brass Tacks, Anaka Narayanan. The panel was moderated by Sumi Gupta, Curator, VR Art Programmes. A specially-choreographed bharatnatyam performance by Rukmini Vijayakumar and the unveiling of the VR Art Car 2019 followed. The art festival, until 11th February, is showcasing over 60 installations and 50 works of fine art by established and emerging artists. It also features an impressive line-up of events such as an Art Competition for children in association with Global Art, an Art Bazaar that is bringing together artisans from across India and Art Cinema – a special screening of the critically acclaimed movie “Pollock”.

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony - 25.11.2018

The Holiday Season kicked off with a tree-lighting ceremony at Swargamandapam. The lights of the magnificent 50-foot tree was turned on by students from Suyam Charitable Trust and Siragu Montessori School.

Margazhi Event Curtain Raiser - 24.11.18

The Art Festival by Kartik Fine Arts is an annual event held during the Margazhi month of the Tamil calendar. A celebration of the art and culture of South India, this 35-day festival attracts renowned musicians and performers from across the region. VR Chennai is the main sponsor for this year's art festival and hosted a special curtain raiser which was attended by stalwarts like Sri. L Sabaretnam and Sri. K M Narasimhan. The Association also announced their annual awards and the winners were felicitated at the event. This was followed by a Bharatnatyam recital by 'Natya Chudar' Akila Subramanium. The 44th Year Art Festival by Kartik Fine Arts will be held from December 1 - January 5 at the Narada Gana Sabha and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Chennai.

Arctic Exploration with Lego City - 16.11.18 to 18.11.18

The international toy brand, LEGO, known for their distinctive building blocks, held their "Arctic Explorer" event, as part of our Children's Day celebrations. A large play-area was set up at Swargamandapam and children were encouraged to unleash their creativity. During the 3-day event, the Centre reverberated with the giggles of the excited young ones. All participants also got vouchers from our retail partners Hamleys, Fun City and GAP Kids, adding to their joy.

The Golu Festival is an important part of South Indian culture and heralds the beginning of the festive season. As part of the celebrations, a special 24-foot, three-tiered Golu Padi was set up at VR Chennai which narrated various tales from Indian mythology, representations of which can also be found across the Centre. The festive display was inaugurated by Mr. Mark Van De Vreken, the Belgian Consul General.
